The Sevierville Fire Department responded to a report of an apartment building fire on Wednesday, August 21, 2002, at approximately 6:35 p.m. at the Kirkland Manor Apartments on Conley Street. Personnel and equipment from the Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department, Pigeon Forge Fire Department and Gatlinburg Fire Department also responded and assisted at the scene. In total, six fire vehicles and approximately thirty-one firefighters were on the scene. Two apartments in the six-apartment, two-story brick building were extensively damaged by the fire. A third apartment received moderate damage. Two adults were injured and transported to Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center by the Sevier County Ambulance Service. At the scene, their injuries appeared to be related to smoke inhalation and not life threatening.
Firefighters were able to quickly control the fire and extinguish it within approximately twenty minutes. Initial indications were that the fire started in a first floor, corner apartment and then spread to the apartment directly above. The third apartment affected was also on the second floor. Several families were displaced due to the fire. The Red Cross sent a team from Knox County to assist the families. The Sevier County Emergency Management Agency and Sevierville Police Department also assisted at the scene. Sevierville Fire Department Fire Marshall Tommy White is investigating the fire.
