Orion Young Walker, was born on Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at 2:05 a.m. weighing 6 pounds 11 ounces, and was 20” long. His due date was July 29th but Orion decided to come a little before then. Originally, he was to be born in the Lisa Ross Birth Center on Ailor Ave. in Knoxville. Unfortunately, baby Walker had other plans. At about 1:40 a.m. John Walker was driving his daughter’s car, with the baby seat in it, while his wife, Lois, followed with a very pregnant Vicki Walker in the back seat of her Dodge Intrepid. As the trio drove along Chapman Highway in Seymour the little guy couldn’t wait any longer.
Vicki, was on the cell phone with the birth center while Lois said, “ask them what we should do if the baby is born before we arrive?” Vicki didn’t have time to ask that question before Mrs. Walker heard her saying, “The baby is born—the baby is born.” Mrs. Walker heard the crying baby so she flashed her lights in order to have Mr. Walker stop. He found a place to pull over along Chapman Highway in front of Seymour Realty. Mrs. Walker was first to check on the baby and new mom. The Walkers didn’t have a blanket to wrap the baby in, so they took a pillowcase and wrapped him in it. He was then laid on his mom’s tummy and the trio continued up Chapman Highway. The midwife and nurse, at the birth center, were waiting in the parking lot for them when they arrived 30 minutes later. Baby and mom are both doing well. John and Lois Walker have caught up on their sleep, while the new mom will have to wait a few years to do the same.
