According to a reporter in Hollywood Reporter, Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee is on track to be the new chief prosecutor on the long-running NBC drama “Law & Order”. Thompson is said to be joining the cast of the Emmy-winning drama, from Wolf Films and Universal Network Television, in the fall as a regular. The deal will make this Thompson’s first crack at working on a weekly series. He appeared in 18 films before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994. His film credits include: “The Hunt for Red October”, “In the Line of Fire”, “Die Hard 2” and “No Way Out”.
In the series, Thompson’s role will be that of a newly appointed district attorney assigned to supervise assistant district attorneys Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) and Serena Southerlyn (Elisabeth Rohm).
The Hollywood Reporter also stated that Thompson, whose Senate term ends in January, is also expected to appear on NBC’s other two “Law & Order” series, “Special Victims Unit” and “Criminal Intent”.
Thompson said he would be resigning at the end of his term as Senator, citing personal reasons. “Law & Order”, recently received its 11th consecutive Emmy nomination in the best drama category. The show also won the award in 1987. “Law & Order” continues to be high in the ratings for NBC in the Wednesday 10 p.m. time slot. According to Variety “Law & Order” was the seventh most-watched program on broadcast TV with an average of 18.7 million viewers and ranked 11th in adults 18-49. Thompson’s office offered a “no comment” at this time.
