At approximately 3:49PM on Sunday, June 23, 2002, Corporal Bill Barton of the Sevierville Police Department responded to a traffic accident on Middle Creek Road, near Wilson Road. A 1992 Buick Century, driven by 27-year old Jacob Liggitt of Newport, TN, was traveling south on Middle Creek when it collided with a northbound 1994 Dodge Caravan, driven by 54-year old Gary Sexton of Big Stone Gap, VA. According to Cpl. Barton, it appeared that the Buick Century crossed the centerline and collided nearly head-on with the Dodge Caravan. It had been raining and the road was wet, which may have contributed to the accident.
Liggitt was taken to Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center by the Sevier County Ambulance Service, where he was subsequently transported via Lifestar air ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. Liggitt died, apparently as a result of extensive injuries from the accident.
Sexton sustained what appeared at the scene to be minor injuries, as did three other passengers in the Dodge Caravan. A fourth passenger appeared uninjured. The Sevierville Fire Department also assisted at the accident scene. The accident is under investigation.
