The 25th of May turned out to be a great night for racing at 411 Raceway.
It was Custom Car Show night and there was all kinds of cars, along with the Mustang Club. The area behind the main stands was packed with cars. It was also Fireman’s night, and all Firefighters were admitted free.
This weekend is National Welders night. On June 8th. 411 Raceway will run a Late Model Division and the Wedge Late Models. Kids get ready, because on June 15th the Bike races are back for our 3rd kids night this season and that same night 411 will also have a Motorcycle display.
The Baby Grands were off tonight so the Pro-Challenge took to the track first. Off to the early lead was #18 Mark Dyer with #16 Nancy Hardwick right behind. As the laps clicked Mark held his own, and crossed the line in first, #16 Nancy Hardwick 2nd, #4 Tom Stinnett 3rd, #33 Gary Berrier 4th, #77 Rowdy McCall in 5th.
The Chargers were up next. If you are interested in racing, this is the division to start in. All you have to do is get you a car, strip it, put a roll cage in it, get a fire suit and helmet and you are ready to race. Well, you may want to practice first because even though most of these cars were put together for under $1000, and some under $700, these drivers have a tremendous, respect for each other.
As the race started #1 Johnny Kegg bolted to the lead with #3B Brad Seagle in tow, and they pulled away from the rest of the pack. After 20 laps #3B Brad Seagle took the victory, #1 Johnny Kegg 2nd, #32 Travis Sands 3rd, #15 Alan Ruttencutter 4th, and #29 Rick Ballenger 5th.
#2 Fred Hardwick in the Legends, took the lead and never looked back thru 25 laps until he took the checkered flag. Behind Hardwick was #17 Shane Roberts in 2nd, #70 Steve Price, #57 Bruce Wachter, and #19 Janice Humble, rounding out the top 5.
The Classic race had a new face up front tonight. That was the bright orange car of #6 Rocky Estes Jr. Estes had to know that he would feel the pressure, but I don’t know if he realized how much pressure. Estes had a good lead for a while but as #18 Gary Kelley moved his way up from the 7th spot it also brought the #83 car of Brett Baer, #17 Robbie Sands, and #33 Brian Ball, all were gaining ground. The laps were clicking off, but not fast enough. All 5 cars were stacked up now, Kelley made his way around Ball, then Robbie, and then Brett. All Rocky could see in his mirror now was that Moonshiner on Sands hood. Estes put up a good clean fight, but just could not hold off the man who has won six out of seven races this season. #18 Gary Kelley takes his 6th win this season at 411
Raceway, #6 Rocky Estes Jr. 2nd, #83 Brett Baer 3rd, #17 Robbie Sands 4th, #33 Brian Ball in 5th.
#9 Jason Henry, #19 Bobby Northern, and #17 Steve Owens battled hard for 1st place in the Modified Mini race, but as that battle raged on there 4 cars back in the middle of the pack, that had a battle of their own. All four of these cars #33 Jim Galloway Jr., #S3 Tony Stanton, #27 Dennis Martin, and #15 Darrin Myers, became tangled up on the front straight away and all 4 slammed into the turn 1 wall, which sent Tony Stanton sideways on the wall and then up on top of the wall which is about 4 foot tall. Everyone was okay and when the race continued, #9 Jason Henry took the checkered flag, #19 Bobby Northern was 2nd, #17 Steve Owens 3rd, #T7 Danny Tullock 4th and #8 Rick Shepard 5th.
#24 Todd Pierce from Seymour in the 4-cyl Late Model Division took his 2nd win of the season, with #3 Byron Ward in 2nd, #46 Bobby Morgan 3rd, #61 David Kitts 4th and #98 Steve Ritchey was 5th.
As the Wedge Late Models took the track, the full moon was shining brightly down on 411 Raceway. The Wedge cars continue to amaze the crowd that come to 411, most of the cars are so closely matched up that it makes for a very exciting race, and this one was
not exception. #8 Adam Beeler jumped up to the front in no time at all, and remained there for a most of the race, but the #107 Scott Dyke and #24 Larry Sullivan were on the move and edging their way to the front.
Dyke made it to the 2nd spot first, but soon after Larry was 3rd, as Dyke tried to make his way around Beeler so did Sullivan, the three got tangled up, sending Beeler to the back. On the restart with six laps to go, it was Dyke in the lead with Sullivan in second as lap 37 rolled around it was time for Sullivan to make his move, which ended up being successful. Sullivan took the win and in a very close second was Dyke,
