Sadness echoed through the music world on April 27, 2002 as news that Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes had been killed in a car crash. The singing sensation was part of a three-girl group TLC. The group topped the charts with their R&B rythme.
The crash occurred in Honduras where the 30-year-old singer was on vacation. She was one of seven in the car at the time of the accident and the only fatality.
It was reported that LA Reid, who heads TLC’s record company Arista was devastated by the news, as were the singer’s fans. Reid was quoted by the BBC as saying, “Lisa was not only a gifted and talented musical inspiration, but more importantly, she was like a daughter to me.” He added: “My thoughts and prayers are with Lisa’s family and friends. The bands other two singers Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas released a statement that they were “as close as a family” and that they had, “truly lost our sister”.
The groups hits included “No Scrubs” and “Waterfalls” as well as their most recent album, 1999’s FanMail which topped the charts for five consecutive weeks. They also received a Grammy the following year for best R&B album.
Lopes recently joined forces with UK star Spice Girl Mel C with the song, “Never Be The Same Again” and her single “The Block Party” hit the UK’s top 20. It was reported that Lopes had recently signed a solo deal with the Death Row label to record under the pseudonym Nina – standing for New Identity Not Applicable.
