January 31st the Seymour Primary School kicked off their two-week reading program with the theme, “Catch the Magic”. Parents and students were welcomed to the school from 5:00 pm – 7:00 p.m. by Tigger, Bugs Bunny, Curious George, Slugger, Snow White’s Evil Queen, Clifford, Franklin and others. “The response was overwhelming,” stated Sandy Hutcheson, first grade teacher and coordinator of the event. We expected maybe 100 people to turn in slips saying they would attend and we received close to 700. We ordered over 225 pizzas!” Pizza was available for $1 a slice as well as drinks donated by area businesses. “We really want to thank everyone who helped support the event with their time and donations” stated Hutcheson. Other attractions included a book fair and storytelling by local favorite Charles Maynard. The reading program is currently in it’s fourth year. Each class is given a goal of 500 books to read between the 1st and 13th of February. The class that reads the most books wins a field trip to Country Tonite’s Magic show and a lunch at Mr. Gatti’s. Each class that meets their reading goal will be invited to a magic show by “The Amazing Fenton Magician” (who has been known to double as the principal of Seymour Primary).
